What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. At Aurora Dentistry, our dentists perform extractions only when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if keeping the tooth will compromise your oral health.
Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Repairing Excessive Damage
In most cases, your dentist will work to save a tooth whenever possible. However, there are circumstances, such as injury, gum disease, or excessive decay, which require extraction.
If you have a damaged tooth that needs to be extracted, your dentist will discuss tooth replacement options with you, which may include dental bridges, dental crowns, and dentures.

This extraction is a simple procedure where no incisions are needed and your dentist can remove the tooth directly. This procedure is often performed to remove a dead or decaying tooth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.

Surgical Tooth Extraction in Aurora
While this tooth extraction typically won’t require the use of general anesthesia, the procedure is more complex than a simple tooth extraction. Sometimes, patients undergo an X-ray so their dentist can see the tooth structure, allowing them to plan accordingly. We use local anesthesia to numb the area, and we may need to make some incisions to expose more of the tooth’s structure.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth, usually between 17 and 25 years of age.
